The Jožef Stefan Institute (JSI) is the leading Slovenian scientific research institute, covering a broad spectrum of basic and applied research. The staff of more than 930 specializes in natural sciences, life sciences and engineering. An important aspect of the Institute is its co-operation with renowned institutions around the world, and its involvement of its staff in teaching. More than 200 employees are habilitated at the three Slovenian universities (University of Ljubljana, University of Maribor, and University of Nova Gorica).

The Institute is also, together with industrial partners, a co-founder of the Jožef Stefan International Postgraduate School. The Institute is active in transferring the results of its research and knowledge into practical applications for enhancing the technological and economic development of Slovenia. The Institute is strongly involved in training of personnel and in performing research for external users. It works in close collaboration with many industrial companies both national and international, and is continually improving its knowledge transfer of its
researchers and innovators to industry. Department of Environmental Sciences (JSI-O2) focuses on multidisciplinary research with emphasize on combination of physical, chemical and biological processes that influence the environment, man and human activities (www.environment.si). JSI-O2 had in 2017 together 62 employees (25 researchers, 7 postdoctoral associates, 23 postgraduates and 7 technical and administrative employees).
